Line them up perfectly!!!

Even if it is just one tooth off the idle will suck and you could possibly damage the head/valves.

jidasas is right, having the timing off by one tooth could cause the valve to bang into the piston.

there is a cheap tool that most every parts store sells, it's an ajustable cam lock tool and it is worth everybit of the $20-$25.

if you own the car for a couple years you will need to swap timing belt every 40000 miles and having the tool is well worth it.

That tool is great !

I remember when I needed one.

BUT......

I didn't want to drive the 80~100 miles round trip to town to get one.

So, I improvised.

Actually, there is a "how to" drawing in the Lanos Factory Service manual.

The cam-gears will line up without the tool. You have to have three hands though.
Use an open end wrench (I forgot but think 15/16" SAE).......Not on the cam lob !!!!!!!
Don't scratch any cam-lobes w/the wrench.
But on the square shoulder (next to the cam-gear) on just one camshaft.
Do this only when all marks are "almost" lined up and just one tooth off.

As I recall? I did the outer shaft (closest to radiator) You have to "HOLD" that camshaft in position (w/wrench) when you fit the T belt-teeth to the cam-gears.
After your finished? Be sure to rotate the crankshaft by hand, clockwise, a few times to be absolutely positive that all marks line up perfectly.

All this is fairly easy and took me longer to type it here than to do it on the engine.
