NEED HELP PLEASE, Engine noise on 2000 Lanos

Post by superTD »

I have a Daewoo 2000 Lanos, and this morning I just noticed that there is a loud noise (very uncomfortable) come from near T-belt area, I think there might be a problem with the T-belt. The car is just over 90K, and never had T-belt replaced. The car is still drivable, but I think it will damage the engine if I keep driving it. I will take it to car shop. I don’t know if I should take it to private shop or dealership to fix it? I heard dealership charges a lot more than private shop. If I change T-belt and water pump, what would be a reasonable price? I really appreciate if any experts can give me some suggestions. THANK YOU!

Thanks MMamdouch. But I drove about 40 miles after I initially heard the nosie. Do you think that might somewhat have damaged my engine? Thanks!

Lucky Man,

If you are sure that this noise is coming from T-belt area:
Don't drive your car if you want to save big $$! TOW it to the repair shop/dealer to have the job done as belt can snap anytime.
Price for a good brand kit (belt, idler, tensionner, pump) in my country is around 150~200 euros (200~270USD). Add labour price.

Yes, you are lucky,
(':)')

If your engine was running when you shut it down you are probably ok. If the belt is broken or teeth are chewed off it ?
The engine will not run.
Do not restart it even for a second. As one second is all it will take for the belt to break resulting in bent valves, etc.

As far as dealer vs independent shop ? Yes, the dealers generally charge more. If you know of a good reputable shop that has experience with Daewoo timing belts etc... Than contract them do it. But don't take it to a shop that has never done a woo before no matter how reasonable the price is. Research before you have it hauled to anyplace.

You will need a timing belt, a tensioner and an idler pulley also a new water pump.

I predict other Daewootech members will provide you with information as to where you can get these parts.

you are very lucky, 90k is a long time (my silver car went 125k befor it snapped) but any ways, get a gates brand belt. and make sure they know what they are doing, or they could mess things up worse.
