Can having too much oil damage anything? I went to a shop recently and it looks like they overfilled my car with too much oil. There's spills of oil on my engine cover even though the cap is tightly closed. And I always smell oil after driving long distances. I will most likely go back there to have them lower the level, but I'm extremely busy... so I just want to know if that could damage anything?
Thanks.

I've heard its really bad to have it overfilled...I think my Dad told me that and he hasnt done an oil change for at least 30 years.

from what ive heard you can mess your rings up, and gaskets and seals, but that all depends on how over full it was. my dad once built a small block chevy 350 for a guy, the guy put in the wrong oil dipstick (there are 2 variations, a long one that goes in the lower part of the block, and a short version, that goes in the top part of the block), he put the long one in the top of the block, well 17 quarts of oil later (its supposed to be 5) the dip stick read full, and that car SMOKED like you wouldnt believe! my dad fixed the dipstick problem, and drained the oil to a normal level, the car ran great after that. that was a EXTREME case of too much oil, and since it wasnt ran long it was fine. if your car is smoking alot, you should get it in to be fixed ASAP, but you can also just loosen the drain plug and let some of the oil drain til its at the correct level.
i think it increases the oil pressure or throws too much oil on the pistons that the oil rings can't handle and the car will smoak.

it's very bad!! if you use too much oil on a L4 (inline four) you can blow the motor up, i lost my first car that way.
no, extra oil will not increase oil pressure, i'll post a trick for that once i get my block back from the mechine shop.
if you stay on top of your oil changes, use synthetics, and plan to get big horsepower #'s or want to race your car you should run the motor 1/4- 1/2 qt low.
here's why: when the crank spins in the block it spalshes in the oil with every rotation, it's called windaging. the "windage tray" helps to stop it.
when the crank spins into the oil it slowes the crank down and you lose power. if anyone gets dyno time they should do a pass at capacity or a little past and one at 1/2 qt low and see the differece.
so long story short extra oil means less power, a lot less power.

Thanks guys, yesterday I went back to the shop and they lowered the oil level for me. I haven't really noticed difference in power, but I haven't really pushed it either. My car is pretty slow either way, so any loss in power is not really that significant for me... it's just a commuter car. Thanks though
