Replacing the head gasket on a Lanos?

Post by Tronz »

First of all hello (from Rochester, NY)! I'm new here, but I've been checking out these forums for the last week; this is a great place!

I was wondering if there was a guide for replacing the head gasket (I already searched and looked in the How-To forums) or maybe you guys could post one. I am attempting to do this with the help of my dad. If you can't post a whole guide, I really need to know things like the torque specification for the bolts, how to handle the timing (I don't want to re-time), any tools or products I need, any advice and tips, etc.

2000 Daewoo Lanos 1.6 L DOHC
4 Door Hatch Back, Automatic Trans
(Let me know if u need to know anything else)

Background - kind of long, you don't have to read this, what I really need is a head gasket replacement guide, but this is here if you have further suggestions on how to permanently fix my problem:

I haven't done any work on the engine yet so I don't know what exactly my problem is, but I'm pretty sure I have a blown head gasket. Don't know what caused it. One day the engine suddenly became very rough and was spewing white smoke from the exhaust, which smelled sweet. I looked in the coolant tank (after shutting off the engine) and it smelled like gasoline. I looked at the oil and it looked fine. I haven't done the test to see if bubbles appear while the engine is running (I don't want to turn the engine on any more). I've only turned it on 2 or 3 times since the problem began and only for a few minutes (to avoid overheating and warping); I never saw the temp get past half-way on the guage.

Before I really noticed the problem (the drastically irregular shaking), I was mysteriously losing coolant. The first time I noticed was when I took my car in to get the transmission fluid and filter changed and they told me the coolant was almost empty. On my trip to the mechanic, when I was warming up it began to overheat (didn't reach red line) until I moved it and it became normal. Sometimes I'd see a small puddle of coolant on the ground. So I guess I have a leak and blown head gasket!

I don't think this is related but I'll throw it in here just in case. I went to the mechanic for a transmission tune up because I was noticing transmission fluid puddles and was losing acceleration power. I think it ended up being the transmission pan's gasket, I got that replaced and I no longer saw puddles. I had just bought a (used) transmission because I had damaged the original one on the crappy streets of New York City (a raised sewer drain on an unpaved street scraped the transmission from below and tore back some of the pan).

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

There is the whole shebang. Also, in the FAQ section, there is a thread devoted to just the head bolt specs. These can easily be found in the manuals I posted though. I encourage you to download the whole thing and hang onto the files for future use. All kinds of goodies in there.
