Hello from Montreal

Post by OilSpill »

Hi,

I've been lurking on your forum for a few weeks. My name is John, I live in Montreal, Canada.

I'm not a Daewoo owner, but I'm starting to look at them with some interest. I drive mid-90's FWD Ladas, a model named Samara in Canada, Sputnik in the rest of the world. Right now, I have three that run well. At one time, I owned five, two of which I cut up with a reciprocating saw. You can see pictures and stories on my site: http://www.ladalove.com

My main interest in Daewoo is the engine. All of engines are 120+K and I've had two head gaskets fail in the last 24 months. Rebuilding is an awkward idea as I'd have to import all the parts myself and the result would be a car that couldn't be serviced anywhere except my own front drive. I'm planning on installing a common engine so that I can have a car trustworthy enough to travel cross-country and servicable at any garage. Looking at pcitures on this site, I think the GM engine in your cars might be a good candidate.

I've taken a very good look at your sticky topic about 2L engines (http://www.daewootech.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4277) and it looks to me that the engine mountings might be similar to what the Lada factory installed in their newer model. Based on this, I'd like to find out more and decide whether I could transplant a Daewoo engine without too much trouble.

My goal is to be build a reliable, fuel-efficient car. Nothing too fancy, something that could move my car along nicely and pull a small trailer, say 85HP.

Which engine from the Daewoo/GM lineup would be best for me? Availibility in North America is very important to me.

Is there anyone on this forum in Montreal? Could I swing by and take some measurements?

Thanks,
John

First of all, hello and welcome. I don't know much about the 2L, i drive the United States 1.6 Lanos, and in canada, i think you have the 1.5, which if i am not mistaken, is exactly the ideal hp that you needed. if you could so to help us out, post some pictures of the engine bay in your car, the mounting places, some places like where the engine componets are at so we can help you figure what would be best for your car, and the easiest to fit using the mounting points. Then we could start from there.

Sure...

My engine has three mounting points.
One is attached to the engine block
...1) (brown) middle front of the engine block, connecting to the lower part of the frame under the radiator.
The other two attach to the 5 speed manual transmission...
...2) (green) front part of transmission, driver's side (north american, left) of the car at the front, ahead of the wheel
...3) (blue) back of transmission connecting to framing under the driver's feet.

The brown mount attaches at the red section. The green mount at the light green:

The engine bay is about:
...35 inches (890 millimeters) wide between the frame beams
...24 inches (600 millimeters) deep from firewall to top rad rail

This is the best shot I have of the engine bay right now (no engine, viewed from driver's side):

Here's a photo of the engine I want to replace:

This car has no cross-member underneath the engine, so removal/installation is easily done from underneath; no lifting required:

Anything is doable with proper tools and $$$

And if my memory serves me well, newer Ladas were fitted with Opel's C20XE. THen again, it was only in Europe.

Based on your photos, I dont see how any of GM-Daewoo motors would fit without modifications. I dont even believe you could retain your exisiting gearbox....

But for the most inexpensive solution, would be the 2.0 8V variant from Subrid. The one you want would be the MPFI 93+ model (plenty of them on the scrapyards). Makes 115hp and about 100-110lbs, so it would be a good choice for fuel economy and torque required to tow a trailer.

Luckily, I have no intentions of keeping the russian gearbox; it's been fine, but is coming to the end of it's life with no reasonable replacement to be found in the Western world :~)

Yes, I know that I'll have to get a set of driveshafts made up to fit this, but I'm ready to do that.

Yes, you're right about the relationship between the 2110 (one model later than mine) and the C20 engines. That is why I've come to this group. When I started searching out information about the C20, I found your thread on upgrading the Lanos 1.6 to the C20 style 2L engine.

If I need to add a new motor mount on the passenger side frame rail to install a C20 style engine, I'm ready to do that.

This fellow fit a C20 into his Corsa, http://www.pro-corsa.de/40016.html

Would this be all I need to make the left side mount:

if i understand correctly then you are putting a 2.0 Daewoo engine in your samara... if that is the case then this engine mount is the wrong one, this one you got fits the 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6 lanos engines.

the one for the 1.6, 2.0 and 2.2 from a Nubira/Leganza is different, this is the one you need:

Thanks MM,

That looks like the same support they use in the Cavalier. Is the Daewoo 2L engine the same as the Cavalier engine?

The two supports that connect to the transmission, are they the same for the 1.6 and the 2L?

i am not sure of the similarity of the Daewoo 2L engine and the Cavalier as we don't have them Cavaliers here in Egypt.

also i am not 100% sure about the tranny mounts, as far as i know the mounts are different on the lanos and nubira (cars sharing the 1.6, 2.0 engines) BUT the tranny case can accept either setups so you go with the one that fits your chassis.

on the 1.5/1.6 lanos the tranny case is held by an arm and a mount from the radiator side and on the other side another short arm and a mount, you can see a pic for the mount and arm in JohnnyC's recent post.

on the 1.6/2.0 nubira both sides of the tranny are bolted to an inverted Y shaped member and the tip of that member s bolted to one engine mount that is under the battry, on theside facing the radiator their is some kinda support beam holding the tranny to the lower part of the car's front frame to prevent the engine/tranny from twisting during acceleration or engine braking.

i recon for your car it will be easyer to go with a lanos setup as you have kinda small engine bay compared to the nubira one.

Yes, JohnnyC's posting (http://www.daewootech.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7771) shows a mount that is similar to mine.

That's exactly what I expected when I looked at the Lanos mount schematics: http://acdc-service.ru/images/lanos/270.gif

This is why I think it might be possible to go with this engine.

Are there any active members in Montreal? I'd really like to be able to measure up an engine and see first-hand. There aren't many Lanos in my neighbourhood.

What's the availability for parts for these engines in Canada and the US?

Thanks,
John

Would anyone be kind enough to post measurements of the Lanos engine bay? Thanks.
