ok i know that its a bad valve cover gasket but thats not the question
the question is that would oil in the spark plug area cause the engine to smoke on start up?
oil in spark plug area?

"engine smoak" as in smoak from the tail pipe or engine bay smoak?
anyways i don't think it is related to leaky cam cover gasket... only time i got "hot startup tail pipe smoak" was on my old VW beetle when i was using too thin engine oil... the oil starts to evaporate when the hot engine wa turned of abd the vapour wil accumilate in the crank case... at startup the oil vapour is beeing sucked into the intake and get burned causing a big cloud of oil smoak that lasts for 2 seconds or so.
