Hey guys. I have a 1988 Optima with the 1.6L SOHC TBI motor. I am looking to do the 2.0L 8V turbo swap from a turbo Sunbird. I have a few questions before i jump into this swap.
1. As i understand the motor will bolt in without any issues using the stock tranny, But My car is not equipped with power steering, i am guessing that this should not be a big deal and i should be able to just unblot the power steering and reroute the belt?
2. Now i know the ECM will have to be changed, along with the wiring harness. How hard is it to wire in the sunbird harness? will anyone here be able to give me some guidelines to follow when it comes time to wire everything in?
3.Being that the Sunbird has MPFI, and my car only has TBI will i have to upgrade/replace the fuel pump for the switch to MPFI?, as i assume they both have different fuel pressures.
4. I recently put a new clutch in, will i be able to use the clutch/pressureplate/flywheel on the 2.0L 8V motor?

1. no problem. But, gearbox could be a problem.
2. How complex wiring 1988 car can have?
3. You have to replace pump.
4. no. You should use all for 2.0...

So my tranny may be a problem then? Bellhousing is different or... I believe it is either a F16 or a F13 transmission. I cannot remember which.mister_g wrote:1. no problem. But, gearbox could be a problem.

The wiring doesnt seem that hard, as long as i can get wiring diagrams for both cars i shouldnt really have too much of a problem i dont think.
What fuel pump would be sufficent? the Fuel pump out of the Sunbird turbo?
Ok, i take it the 2.0 has a stronger clutch or...

1) Make sure you have the 5-speed gearbox. You will need to get the flywheel from the Lemans 2.0, and clutch/pressure plate. F16 bolts right to the C20GET block (same belhousing in 1.6 and 2.0)
2) Wiring is relatively easy but time consuming.
3) Use sunbird turbo fuel pump, straight bolt-on
4) 1.6 clutch has smaller diameter than 2.0...besides you will need to use 2.0 flywheel, so that answer is not.
Option #2....bring the car to Edmonton and Chris and I will do the install for you. He has Lemans 2.0 Turbo now, I used to (blew the motor).

It is a 5 speed. So i will need the flywheel from a 2.0 N/a Lemans? The flywheel will not work from the Turbo motor? This should not be a problem as the junkyard here has a few optima/lemans 2.0's there.GsiTurbo wrote:1) Make sure you have the 5-speed gearbox. So, so far i will need.
Turbo motor/wiring harness/ECU
Motor mount from a 2.0L lemans
Sunbird Turbo fuel pump.
Flywheel/clutch/pressure plate from a 2.0L lemans.
Anything else im missing for the basics?
If the car was worth anything i would bring it to edmonton, and have you guys put it in, but the car is a little on the rough side, and i just want to have some fun with it doing this motor swap, since i blew up the 1.6L motor.
