Engine shutting off at 2000 RPM then picking back up

Post by tn.tramp »

I have recently become the proud (or maybe not) owner of a 2001 Lanos sedan with a 1.6 dohc engine. The previous owner had a couple of people to look at it and they had no idea of what is wrong and I don't really know what they have tried. This has about 60K miles on it and I don't know of any repairs other than a new fuel filter.
between 2000 and 2500 RPM it is like you shut the key off and as soon as the RPMs drop below 2000 it will pick back up.It is a bit sluggish on take off.I have erased the OBD codes and have no CEL after running the engine. It makes no difference if I am driving or just sitting still ,hot or cold. It does idle smoothe though.I was told that the timing belt could have jumped a tooth on one of the cams ,but with the crank gear pointing to the notch at the bottom, the 2 cam marks are lined up pointing to each other. I haven't checked the fuel pressure with a guage,as most of my toold from 30 + years of owning my oun shop were stolen a few months back. I retired in 97 and have no experience on much of anything any later than 93 or 94 and this was GM engines in Postal Vehicles. I'm needing help here as the wife is threatening to divorce me....maybe this is good? so HELP GUYS any ideas will be appreciated

id say get new plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter and do a fuel system cleaning. also get a new timing belt on her asap! they like to break after about 45k miles. is it an automatic or a manual transmission?

OOPS I forgot to say it was an automatic. I figured to do the plugs.wires, filters, and timing belt. Was wondering about fuel pressure

fuel pressure is some 42 psi as far as i remember, a TB and intake cleanup will help as well.
