what the different about running lean and running rich?

Can anyone tell me this.

Lean + rich are mixture terms... when you're running lean, you're getting more oxygen and less fuel... and rich is more fuel less oxygen...

the optimum ratio is 14.7 air to 1 fuel... having more fuel to air (i.e. 9:1 or less) is running rich and at this point you are consuming more fuel than needed and the performance is going to suffer as well as imissions... usualy this is associated with black smoak from the exhaust.

if you are running lean (i.e 17:1 or more) then you have too much oxygen per the fuel amount... heat will build up fast and you can blow your engine if you continue to run like that.
