How to check if my timing belt needs replacement

How would I check to see if my timing belt needs replacement in my Lanos? I don't know how many miles are currently on it since I just recently got it. The Odometer says 72k miles, but it was broken for a while so the mileage is off.

Just curious if there is a way to tell.

well... even if you managed to take it off the car for throughout inspection; it could look good and break after a while.

it is always recommended to change it every 50k miles just to be safe along with tensioner, idle pully and water pump.

if your odometer is off then their is no way to know how many miles on the current belt... it will be smart to replace it now and fix the odometer.

i would change it way earlier than 60k. As mmandouh said, change it at 50k and i pretty much agree although mine only reached 49k and then boom.

i replace mine every 40k KILOMETERS... can afford to many belts but not another engine.

actually there is a how to in the how to mod section and it is also listed in the service manual.

the only thing is the tool too remove the water pump isa 42mm crows foot or just a 42mm wrench.

If you don't know the history of a car it's always best to get the belt changed as a matter of precaution. The age of the belt as well as mileage is important.

Yeah... thats the feeling I'm getting. I'm not 'getting the belt changed' though. I'll be changing the belt myself I think.

Or at least as soon as I can figure out the best place to get all the stuff to replace (tensioner, water pump, etc)

Mine made it to 130,000 miles before i changed it the first time. Even then it was in really good condition. I have to get to changing it again soon.

Finding the parts isn't hard. It's adjusting the belt! I couldn't find a crows foot wrech! It took me and my friend a hour or so. If people have alternative ideas please explain exactly how you did it!

Someone suggest using a bar and tapping the top? Again with me it took people...............
