I agree with Mohamed, have a go, even at the road-side. close the hood when you had enough for the day etc. You have nothing to loose by trying. Value of car, against cost, maybe you will trash it, but it still worth the same money. You only can gain on this problem. maybe you can get a little help from Ex's mates too. Go for it!

Sorry to be nuisance here, but why did they decide it needed this gasket replacing??, it is not a usual thing to change at service times!! Sounds like they took the top off to look at the valves etc(should not need it really, they are automatic adjusting)
Maybe it was ok until they changed it, if indeed it was the CAM cover gasket they changed!!... thus, why, after they changed this, did it go bang elsewhere!!. It has not got hi-mileage on the clock... and then Headgasket goes!!... a bit odd if you ask me?
I am a little confused by the Mechanics logic!! (i got a vision of a one armed baboon wielding a spanner aimlessly)
Go and give 'em earache!, it doesn't add up to me!!

Re: Costly Repair!!!
Sorry to hear about the big repair bill. If you were near Stoke-on-Trent I could have recommended an excellent mechanic who is very reasonable and also specialises in Daewoo's. I wouldn't lose faith in the car as yours has now been fixed it is one less thing to worry about going wrong. Do you know if they replaced the cam-belt at the same time because that is the only other major thing these cars suffer from. If the cambelt breaks it's usually end of engine so it's critical they get changed every 40k miles, but would have made economical sense to have changed it at the same time as doing the head.gizneedshelp wrote: Anyway I now got my car back but due to the huge repair bill and not wishing to endure any more great costs, I have slightly lost faith/trust in the car and am on the look out for another motor and will eiather sell mine for what I can get or scrap it (which seems a shame as it runs beautifully now) Once again thanks for all the advice and I will definitely recommend your board and others of a similar ilk to people with car troubles.......you have all been so helpful and kind. I think we need more boards of this sort in the UK, no offence but everyone here seems to be abroad! LOL You all take care and keep up the good work and once again THANK YOU ALL
I scrapped my old Nexia a few months ago. It was old, battered & high mileage but ran absolutely lovely. I couldn't even give it away in the free ads so ended up taking it the breakers for ?25 scrap! The Daewoo is a very underrated car in the UK.

It was the rocket cover gasket that was replaced due to an oil leafk.............the head gasket going, I am told, is/was due to corrosion???? your vision is exactly the same as mine when it comes to mechanics...........or maybe its because they always 'rip' off women?????? I guess this time round I am lucky I had savings put aside but then again, its still a lot of money! I am going to be shopping around for mechanics in future, i have had one recommended by a friend although the person in question is not someone I would have thought of using, always thought he was a bit of a cowboy, but if its good enough for my mates 3yr old Audi, then hey he cant be doing much wrong! As for the tiing belt yes this was changed along with a thermostat and some other bits that I cant recall at the moment............will have to dig out he repair bill. At the moment I m stil running my Nexia however, its debateable whether I will undertake long journeys in it, although I do have my friendly breakdown service to call on ..........LOL Oh the shame of being towed.........LOL Mind saying that I noticed a 2yr old car broken down on the motorway this morning so at least I dont feel tooooooo bad with mine being 9yrs old! Maybe they just dont build cars like they used to.......bit like houses I guess If anyone knows of any female friendly garages......................................RichieOzzie wrote:Sorry to be nuisance here, but why did they decide it needed this gasket replacing??, it is not a usual thing to change at service times!! corrosion is where the gasket material deterorate and leaks develop... according to the coroded part you could leak coolant into oil or coolant into combustion chamber or even leak inbetween combustion chambers.
i got a pic for a coroded gasket at home... will post it later.

Ref Corrosion... shouldn't occur, change the coolant when it is tired.
All good/normal coolants have Inhibitors in them now. I know Fiats do this trick too, the "Paraflu" (not for avian colds btw!) coolant looses its properties quickly, the Oh-No! turbo was wearing it out in less than 1 year(Wierd, prob likes the taste of the chemical they use).
I'd love to know how the mechanic worked this out without lifting the top off though?
Lesson number one(and i know it has taken many years for me to accept it too), keep the coolant checked for quality regularly!, tap water just isn't the thing?!?!
Got to admit, i love going to Garages with chicks, and listening to the "Mechanics", and then ripping pieces out of what they tell 'em.
"Vive Female car enthusiasts" !! don't take no C$%p from anyone!

didn't really get what you mena by "without lifting the top off " so please elaborate.
Chris - the car owner - did the job himself and it is documented on the daewootech yahoo group... i saw that he was using tap water for some time before this happened.
i did that for about a week or two just to jest that my radiator is not leaking after i replaced the right tank... didn't want to lose all my coolant for a third time in one month time.
i recently flushed the system and i am using coolant once again... have been on coolant for the past 7 years and i got no signs of rust whatsoever.

Hi Mohammed.
"Lifting the top off", or "lifting the lid off", is an expression for taking the cylinder head off.
Ref the cooland leak. I have tried the water game once or twice, only to find that when i put coolant in, the Ethyline Glycol in it kind makes the cooland more likely to find leaks, it effectively makes the water thinner, and finds more leaks too!!.
I have of late, when I have moved a tube about etc, started cleaning then on all interface areas(more than normal), and v-finely smearing Blue non-setting Gasket goop around the flange areas, and have got to admit, it has (appears to) help on sealing hoses for me. Try it next time.
The coolant has a higher heat capacity too, better if you wanna make sure it doesn't get too hot at first time you drive it, and it will give the coolant sensors more accuracy, as the engine was designed to work in the range.
p.s. I have even taken to using it on air/vacuum pipes, as the MAP sensor is very susceptable to slight air leaks, espec when the tubing is aging a little.

in this case then he did lift the lid off... it is impossible to replace head gasket with the head on... i am sure you know that.
i'll try to dig up the posts where the guy documented the job.

Yeh, sure, but what was the reason for it in the first place? when you are paying for a Garage to do it, they surely had a reason?, but just a service, and then drastic moves, it makes you wonder.
Got to admit if I put the sealant you can buy at motor factors in, and it seals it, then yes, i'd whip the top off it.
Am trying to work out why, ok, "Gizneedshelp" said it was corroded etc, but you can only tell when you have taken the top off.
It's that it is not a usual thing to do for an oil leak on the rocker top, is to tell from that that the head gasket is corroded!
Have got to say, if this was done to me, and the gasket failed, it's the responsibility of the garage, as they didn't do it right, even though you paid to get it done. Consumer advice is my recommendation.
What do you think?

chris did that 'cause he was leaking coolant, vapor in the exhaust, oil turned to mayonaiz (spelling) and no. 4 spark plug was always rusty.
if you remove the cam (aka rocker) cover and find out that your oil is like mayonaiz then you are leaking coolant into the oil and usualy the head gasket it the prime suspect.
if they removed the head then they should have replaced the gasket anyways as you can see in the pic it will never survive the removal and will break byond repair as the case with all gaskets.

Yeah, true, never re-use gaskets in this area mate.
Got to be aware that Mayo in the Rocker top are can be caused by Short runs too. Vapour in exhuast can be just condensation in the plumbing there.
Worst one i saw was an old girl, who just jollied to shops locally everyday, and the Silencers all rotted from the inside out. It was hard to explain to her!!
I have only re-used head gaskets on small 2 stroke motors, 'cos we were young, at uni, and skint!! ..... happy days!!
