Engine performance and fuel level

Post by MMamdouh »

Hi guys

i noticed that my car performes better when it is low on fuel...

yes, when i have less than 1/4 of a tank it feels more responsive and gets better as the fuel gets lower... anybody have the same case?? anyone got a logical explanation for that?

The car is lighter. Lotsa people aren't really paying attention to that fact when they fil their tanks. Fuel has weight and really upsets the balance of the car when the tank is full. Many people also think that keeping your tank full somehow causes the fuel consumption to be less. Quite the opposite. You burn more fuel with a full tank than with a heavy one. That's because of the additional weight that the car has to be pulling around. Another thing is that the tail of the car becomes heavy and when you corner you can feel the ass swaying back and forth. AWFUL! I've NEVER filled the tank in ANY of my 4 cars. HATE how even 3/4 tank feels. And for the record running the tank on low in some cars can result in a hot fuel pump (fuel in tank has a radiating effect) but the old adage that somehow you suck more dirt is not true. Fuel pumps suck from the bottom of the tank regardless of the fuel level, and that's where the dirt is.

I dont think that is a major agent of that. you can replace a full tank with an adult person beside you . anyway my car do the opposite think when it is low in fuel. the best level is to fill the 1/2 of the tank . I dont know the princible about that but the most remarkable thing is the Lanos have a variable performance fuel pump. it sometimes run good. some times bad
I can verify that with 3 egyptian assembled lanos with models 1999-2002-2003 . the cars sometimes run very lite some times run heavy . that with a raise in fuel pump sound

lets not throw all the blame on the pump... our fuel is loaded with crap and that can affect the car's performance.

i got feedback from my mechanic with cases that he found water in the fuel and some time fuel mixed with karosen  not to mention the standard issue dirt we have.

my only complaint is the variable performance of the car... i know about the weight and all but it seems so obvious with the fuel at 1/4 or less... when the fuel is dropping from full to 3/4 then 2/4 i feel no change whatsoever but come past 1/4 and the Woo switches to the sport mode  ... till the next refill anyways :?

i cleanup my fuel filter every month (approx. 1000 Kms) and use fuel injector cleaner every 5000 kms to try to keep the fuel system in good condition.

I stand by my theory. I have noticed this not just with my Cielo, but with my Hyundai Excel before it and my Suzuki Swift after it. The Current Corolla I don't drive as hard and have only had it for a month without much real trials. It's the most powerful and torquey of the lot so the difference may not be as readily aparent. It's a matter of physics. The weight of the fuel is lower in the car than passengers. The weight of passengers is solid and higher up and tends to induce roll...fuel weight is fluid (moves around) and lower so induces more of a horizontal sway that can be quite frightening at times.
