Noise

Hi,

I get a funny squeaking noise at intermittent times (more when driving agressively....) from under the hood and it slows the engine.....i was wondering can it be the fan belt slipping????? if so can i tighten it in any way

Sounds like a belt...do you hear it when you just start-up the engine?

It may need some extra tension, or replacement.

No I dont hear it on start up....it at really random intervals...im just wondering what belt it can be and what to do about it......went to the garage and sait its a 200$ job w/ exaust.....I know thats bullcrap....

i was about to say maybe its when you turn on the a/c but if its at random then i don't know what to tell you except to try and check the belts your self to at least see if any of the belts need to be changed.

ok....ive got the 1.5 SOHC...how do i know if a belt is worn?? sry im new to this

just see if it looks like its tearing or wearing down. just a visual might tell you the problem.

i have a similar problem and it turned out to be alternator bearings... also this could be a timing belt tensioner.

try removing both A/C and alternator belt then start the engine if the sound is gone then it is one of the belts or the bearings... if the sound it still their then it is the tensioner.

If you hear a screeching sound that accompanies a loss of power, then that's your alternator belt slipping. Simply loosen the alternator bolt pick up any slack on the belt by adjusting the alternator, then retighten the bolt. You may need a scond pair of hands for this job, along with a lever of some sort. The car is run by the alternator and the battery acts as a storage for any charge that isn't utilised by the car. If the alterntor starts to slip (lose charge) then the battery compensates by default, but is not designed to run the car. Therefore a drop in the voltage of the ignition system is noticed. This reults in a loss of power.

I have a 2005 aveo, i get the same noise, sounds like a belt but its only got 2k and it only does when driving agressively. Its like at 3k and 4k rpm, i think its a shield or something.
