No EGR ??
OK here's a new one on me. My 99 Lanos doesn't have an EGR. I've never heard of a modern car without one. But I've looked all over this engine and don't see any signs of it ever having one. There's no indication of anything being plugged off and there's no bung anywhere on the exhaust to support an EGR. Even the emissions sticker under the hood show's the routing for vacuum hoses etc. for all of the emissions stuff but nothing about an EGR. Anyone else have this? I've been all over this engine and had it up on my lift several times looking for stuff.

Yeah, it has EGR.
Takes exhaust gas through the extreme right of the exhaust manifold, through the EGR Valve, which is a cyliner like thing that is (looking from drivers fender) to the right of the Ignition coil. Then there is a tube that leads from the EGR Tube which leads from the valve around the intake manifold to a mounting bracket right below the TB.

i don't know about the 1.6 DOHC but some of the 1.5 SOHC engines doesn't have EGR valves.

I guess your right, it does have an EGR of sorts. My book shows a typical EGR valve (looks like a flying saucer) common to all I've seen complete with a vacuum line and a tube that routes exhaust gas to the valve with the solenoid mounted below the intake manifold.BosnianLanos wrote:Yeah, it has EGR.

However, on this car the EGR appears to be completely electronic with the solenoid mounted directly on top of it and no vacuum line or exhaust supply tube coming off the exhaust manifold. It all appears to be routed through passages in the head. I've never seen anything like it before.

yeah I'll have to agree that it's odd. What I don't quite understand is why the book show's a conventional EGR setup but the car actually has the solenoid mounted on the top of the EGR valve and there's nothing there for a vacuum signal.daewooluvr wrote:yep, when you take off the exhaust manifold you'll see a lil passage on the #1 port that goes into the EGR. It then goes through the head into that lil solenoid and up into the intake manifold. Very odd set up.
UPDATE:
i saw a 1.5 SOHC lanos at my mechanic's shop and it didn't have an EGR so i asked him for that... he told me that some cars came with no EGR and those cars got no O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold either (i cheked it myself and it is not their). accordingly those cars doesn't have the standard issue vacuum lines going from the intake to the EGR.
instead it got something called a potentiometer to regulate how rich/lean your mixture is. the thing is adjustable with a screw driver, located behind the left strut tower and the adjustment should be done while the car is hooked to the OBD scan machine.
