Destroyed my exhaust today

Post by PrecisionBoost »

Well..... I was at a friends performance shop and we decided to throw the car on the hoist to see what the exhaust looks like.

Holy crap.... that must be the worst exhaust system in history!!!!

The exhaust manifold leads directly into a catalytic converter then it goes from a decently sized pipe (2") into a flex joint which then goes into a slightly smaller pipe (approx 1 3/4")... which leads into the primary catalytic converter then to a resonator and then into a tiny ass pipe ( 1.5" diameter) and then finally into this huge muffler that weighs about 30 lbs.

Needless to say I took off the muffler.... drove it around to make sure it wasn't too loud and then took a sawsall to the pipe leading to the muffler ( so that I could attach the last exhaust mount braket )

So I am now mufflerless..... just a straight pipe.

Tom is drooling over the idea of a cat-back exhaust... my friend who owns the performance shop said it should make 10 hp based upon how tiny and restrictive the current setup is.

I plan on installing a turbo so I'm throwing in some nice 0.065" wall stainless 304 tubing ( 2.5" diameter )

It's larger than I need but I don't want to have to upgrade it later.... I'd prefer to make sure it's good for what ever engine I stick into this car.

Tom snapped off some pictures so I will get them off him and post them sometime later.

i must say that the lanos exhaust isnt the best either.. not only does it have way to many componants on it.. there is to many 90' bends also.. just drop it down another 2" and run a pipe straight from the front to the back

Yes the stock exhaust is pathetic performance wise, was in adelaide the other day and must of spotted at least 10,000 Lanos's, 40% of which had modded exhausts lol,
but one in particular really blew me away, this thing must of been fully worked inside and out, new body kit, race seats, grill and probably the BEST sounding exhaust system ive ever heard on a lanos, bloody thing was crazy, and so loud lol.

Spent about 15 mins following this guy just listening to the wonderful noise this car has the potential of making :D

I should have specified that this was my 2004 Optra 5.

My lanos exhaust was significantly better than this one.... hell even the performance shop owner's Aveo had a better exhaust.

A cat back system should make some real serious power in the top end.

Now I know why the horsepower drops off like a rock after 5500RPM.... that exhaust diameter is too small for the kind of flow the 2.0L makes at higher RPM

yeah the Aveo obnly has 1 cat and 2 mufflers and a resinator. I cut the front muffler off and used a free flow rear muffler. I'm gonna get a custom exhaust with a round magna flow in the middle of the exhaust and res. I'm gonna go to a 2.25 pipes 1 7/8 is too small.
Aveo that moves! Now I need those cams!

2 mufflers AND a resinator?? So that's like 3 mufflers and a cat? Usually it's only 2 mufflers (1 rear and 1 resinator).
