Timing belt busted, and possibly valves are bent, WHAT TO DO

Post by Jesse18873 »

My timing belt busted on my 2000 Leganza while i was driving about a week ago. I took it to a mechanic, he changed the belt, but he said that the car still doesnt run, and he thinks it's because the valves are bent. Has this happened to anybody? And so, can you PLEASE tell me how to fix my problem....any comments would be appreciated!!!!!!

Either have the head rebuilt or buy a used one from www.car-parts.com

Just hope that nothing else was damaged.

Since the engine is interfering, you most likely bent the valves. Removal of the head, or use of a boroscope, will make the problem obvious.

Sorry to be the one to tell you that.

Let us know if you need assistance with parts.

You may requre some new valves, and possibly valve guides. The exact number you will know once the head is examined.

We can supply you with the parts you need.

isn't it better to replace the whole set of valves all together?? i mean if you have some bent exhaust valves then it is better to replace all 8 exhaust valves (assuming you are working on a 16 valve engine) and same thing for intake valves??

my point here is that if you replace some and leave some you will have to take off the head soon to replace the OEM valves when they fail... by soon i mean after their normal service period is over and at this point you will have some old & worn out vaves and some good valves so you might replace some and leave some again... not to mention that you will pay for labor charges for taking off the head twice.

i say replace all of them at once (all 8 or 16 if possible) and give the head a fresh start... it is like replacing the water pump while doing a timing belt job... the pump might look OK but soon it will fail and you will have to do the same job all over again and pay the same or even higher labor cost.

i know my approach is expensive but it is cheaper on the long run so do that if you are going to keep your Woo for long time.

My 2 cents.

i am sure you need some new valves... you already got yourself a new timing belt so just check your tensioner pully and water pump if they need replacment.

replacing those parts afterwords will require the same amount of work beeing done right now and maybe more money that you are currently spending so it is better to do those things while you are in the middle of the head job.

You could but you'd pay an arm and leg.

Yes I would recommend replacing all valves just to be safe.

It's not going to be cheap either way.

Better safe than sorry. Buy the parts as you hit 50K then try to get it changed before 55K.

It'll save ya a ton of money in the long run.

Exactly... paying for a timing belt job costs way less than paying for a head rebuild, timing belt replacment is kinda precautonary procedure rather than a mantenance operation.

i change my belt every 40,000 Kms... better to be safe than sorry.

The timing belt is around $60 and for the labor I paid $210.
