I've had my Optra 5 ( same as Suzuki Reno ) in pieces several times and I have to say that I would have to wonder about the air box noise since it's mounted on a number of points with soft rubber grommets.
I can't think of anything off hand that would interfere as the engine is flexed.
Did you check to see that the bolts on the exhaust heat shield are tight?
How about the radiator mounts.... the coolant hoses are reinforced so they put pressure on the radiator.
Sounds are a tough one.... I'd suggest having someone walk back with the car as you go into reverse to see if they can pinpoint the location... I've had my car about a year and I have a little bit of suspension noise when going over speed bumps.... other than that it's nice and quiet.

I should see who has the most posts these days..... nobody has posted a "most posts" count for a while now.
Thanks, I've been opening the hood, setting the hand brake, starting the car, putting it into reverse, and running up to the front. I have about 30 seconds before the noise goes away. It definitely sounds like it's coming from the air box - timing cover area. I want to find it before spring arrives and the weather gets warmer. It seems like I I have about 3 more months of Winter left where I live. The sound's not a big deal in any way, but it's driving me nuts looking for it.Erfinder wrote:I've had my Optra 5 ( same as Suzuki Reno ) in pieces several times and I have to say that I would have to wonder about the air box noise since it's mounted on a number of points with soft rubber grommets.

That would be Shaun ... he has almost a hundred more than me. I'm not sure where he posted them all, because I must have missed them. I was in the lead for several months.Erfinder wrote:So this is how you managed to surpass my posts by more than a hundred.... you post whore :PTheGreatAndPowerfulOz wrote:Yeah! in those 30 seconds try to firmly hold the suspectid noisy part with both hands and see if the noise stops... make sure it is not hot or a moving part or you will hurt yourself.
i had similar problem with my exhaust... tured out that the internal piping of mid exhaust box decomposed and is rattling inside the box... took me 3 weeks to find that out.

Not sure if this is the same noise or not, but I had to take my Optra back to the dealer to realign the timing belt cover. It was ever so slightly out of alignment, but when it was cold, the belt would rub against the cover making a whining sound. The colder it was, the worse it was. This sound would seem to come from the passenger side of the engine near the air box. Try pushing back and forward on the timing belt cover to see if the noise changes pitch or stops.
