Long Time to Heat Up.

Post by BosnianLanos »

This morning, before dawn, it was like 58 F with wind. Chilly for us Floridians, and the Daewoo I guess. I drove for 11.5 miles to school and the temperature gauge didn't even get halfway into normal operating temperature, I mean, it was still below the white lines. The car ran and accelerated like normal, it just wouldn't heat up. Doesn't really bother me as cold = good, but is that normal?

it's been single digits here over night for the past few months.

I know what ya mean tho. My Lanos always took a while to heat up.

Did this happen only 1 time or is it a constant issue? If it happens all the time I would start to suspect either a malfunctioning coolant temperature sender/gauge or a stuck open thermostat.

Well the thing is during driving it keeps really cool but at a light, the needle goes up to the normal halfway point and then when I start off again, it goes back down to cool. I have zero mods to the cooling system except TB bypass. It isn't that the whole thing is an issue or worries me, it is just strange to see it happen. I mean guys with performance radiators wish they ran as cool as I do.

Big P: It has been happening for the past few months when it has been "cold" i.e. 50-60 F and before that never. Your theory that it could be a stuck thermostat or shot sender might be right because after a water pump failure, I have been running tap water and antifreeze instead of distilled water. I haven't found the time for a change. The system is definately a little rusty (I'm one of the "rare" Lanoses with a metal thermostat). I will do the change this weekend and run a system cleaner through it then add distilled water, antifreeze, and Redline WatterWetter and see if the same thing happens.

its not a problem.. just order the part... 20$ and then when it gets to you change it out.. mine blew out on me while i was driving and didnt know it smelled something funny so pulled over and looked like a valcano from under my car.. poped the hood and that damn thing broke inhalf. took over 2 weeks to get the part so i took some instant gasket stuff and drilled about 8 holes in the housing sealed it and bolted it back together with out a thermostat

I have the metal thermostat housing. So... no drilling, I'm going to empty the system this Sunday and pull off the hose to see if I can free anything up. Actually first I'm gonna pull my CEL light which has been on for like a year and a half. Maybe that has something to do with it.

Well, it looks like I'm getting an OBD 2 Scanner and some torn up hands this weekend...can't wait :x .
