Canadian Chevrolet Optra 2.0 headgasket/timingbelt

Post by esdafoo »

Hello, I'm 27, from Canada.

I have to replace the headgasket on a Chevrolet Optra, wich is the same as a Daewoo Lacetti. We got a 2.0L version of the D-TEC engine. I searched a lot but didn't find everything I need to start the job.

I find on this forum an how-to for the 1.6L engine. I think it's the same way to do but the camgears alignement is different, right?

Do I absolutely need to replace the water pump? I read over the internet that the pump will leak after moving it to release/tighten the timing belt.
Do I also need the special tool to move the water pump?

Now for the head torque.. I found the torque sequence for the GM familly 1 engines (we have Chevrolet Aveo with 1.6L E-TEC also, the engine look the same but I have no idea if it's the same)

And the torque is 25Nm (18lbs ft) + 60° + 60° + 60° + 10°. Is it the same as the 2.0L?

Thank you for your help, I appreciate!

why don't you just grab a new headgasket at a local chevrolet dealer?

The disassembly for the 2.0 is totally different in many respects, you don't move the water pump, there is a belt tensioner that you rotate to remove the tension of the timing belt.

Ideally you should give us your current mileage on the car and say whether the timing belt has been replaced as that is a key thing to look at.

When looking for information reference anything to do with the 2.0L engine from the Nubira as that engine is virtually identical to the Optra from a mechanical standpoint.

Parts for the Nubira are actually cheaper than the Optra, we just did a timing belt in my shop and GM wanted something crazy like $300 for the timing belt tensioner

In the end we had it shipped from the USA as a kit ( timing belt + tensioner ) for about $35.00 USD

So I just have to buy Nubira 2.0 gasket/belt/tensioner on eBay to save money? Thank you.

Hi,

I'm having a similar problem on my 2005 Optra LS Sedan with the 2.0 engine/auto/air and 60,000 KM on the odometer. The timing belt failed while it was running (idler bearing failed as did tensioner) causing the exhaust valves to bend. GM wants about $900 for all the parts (belt, tensioner, idler, exhaust valves, gaskets) and we are planning to have the head redone. Can the Nubira parts be used instead?

Should I be replacing the water pump while this is all apart? Does the Nubira water pump work in this application as well?

Where is a reputable source for these parts?

Thanks,

Brent

There are tons of companies selling timing belt components for the Nubira 2.0L on Ebay, the parts are significantly cheaper.

As far as valves, again look for the nubira as there are hundreds of companies offering replacement parts.

Here is an example on ebay... $86.36 for all eight valves.

here is an example of an entire timing belt and a water pump for $76.46

So that's about $150 plus shipping for all the parts the GM dealer was going to give you plus a few extras.
