1.6 Engine over speeds (Aveo)

Post by aveo owner »

Hello all,
Yes as it says, the wife normally drives this 2004 Aveo and yesterday she said that the engine started racing really high. She said it went up to 6000 rpm's, while she was in drive. I guess it scared the crap out of her, I'm not surprised. I figured it was the floor mat, she insists it wasn't.

I checked it out this morning and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. I took it out and drove it around town for about 10 miles and it worked fine. Has anyone ever had anything like this happen? I know this isn't a Daewoo, but I'm told that it has a Daewoo engine in it and you guys have been a big help before. I told her if it does it again, to put it in neutral and turn the car off if you have to.

Sounds kind of like the trouble that Toyota was having earlier this year. Is the engine speed controlled by the computer? Would the IAC cause this to happen? Maybe the TPS?

Thanks for any input that you can give.

Toni.

tell your wife to take the lead out of her foot :D

check to see if the power/PWR button is on, that causes the transmission to take the engine to redline without upchanging

if it isn't usually on, and your driving style is adapted to it being off, you would get a shock if the engine suddenly wound itself out while accelerating or driving up a hill (any high load situation)

hopefully it's just something as simple as that, but as you say the floor mat is even simpler. hahahaha

Thanks benzino. I checked the owners manual and cannot find this "power button". Can you tell me where this is located? Is it within the drivers compartment area? I'll take a look at it today and see if I can find it. I know there is some type of a shift button on the console between the seats, not sure what that does though. I believe it locks out the shift mechanism.

Yours, Aveo Owner.

Sorry, I checked the console and all I can see is a "HOLD" button and a "SHIFT RELEASE BUTTON" I guess the shift release is in case the mechanism won't release when the brake is depressed and the hold button is for driving in the winter time when the roads are slippery, to keep it in the lower range of the shifting. By the way, this is an automatic transaxle. That may make some difference to you.

i know this might sound odd.. but did you wife have the paddle to the floor...

i don't have a auto but my dads car (03 audi a4) i know it not a daewoo, but on some cars when you the gas paddle to the floor it will rev up to 6k rpm.. it kick it in to overtake mode..

i would say go out to the highway and try it to find out if your has the feature...

edit...
But Try not to speed... :P

There is no pwr button on the Aveo only hold, and it does just that holds the car in 3rd and does not allow overdrive (4th gear) to apply.

I also just have a hard time believing the TPS or ISC caused the vehicle to accelerate to 6k all by itself. These cars are Throttle By Wire and this system is designed in a way where that is IMPOSSIBLE to occur.

Toyota's problem was a physical problem sticking pedal, and no brake override. This is what the new pedals incorporated.

I have this similar problem right now and I am looking for the possible solution for this. However, I think that benzino is doing right.
