2001 daewoo lanos auto 90,000 miles. girlfriend backed out of driveway. went to drive off and car just quit. according to her there was no grinding, shuddering, shaking, noises, etc. Just quit and wouldn't start back up.
I ran the computer for codes and found nothing. Starter spins up just fine, but the engine not even trying to turn over. Had starter tested and passed, but they recommended replacing it because it didn't retract for a few seconds after the key was taken out of start position. replaced it (i have a few choice words for whichever engineer designed the placement of that) still no start. Engine has spark in all cylinders, pulled fuel line past fuel filter and its pumping. I will try to test pressure of fuel tomorrow in the am. Pulled back the top of the timing belt cover just enough to peek inside and the belt was still tight, looks fairly new. checked all fuses. just had oil change maybe 1000 miles ago and oil is still at right level and isn't milky or anything. Battery tested and is good.
I think thats about everything i've done so far. Anything else i should look at before i have a mech look at it?
Thanks everyone

Sounds like you have a really good start on figuring out the problem, perhaps consider doing a compression test just to see where everything is at from an engine mechanical perspective.
Compression testers are cheap and easy to use... it's one of the first things I do when troubleshooting ( even if I think it's fine I like to keep an eye on the total compression as well as how it builds compression in the first few rotations )

Dude.....Your timing belt has sheared teeth. Mine did the exact same thing. Have someone try to start the engine while you are looking at the timing belt, it probably wont move when the starter is engaged. If so, pull the head and rebuild or get a rebuilt head off ebay. I recommend Clearwater Cylinder heads in FL if you are in the states.

That's the reason for the compression test.... to see if there are any issues with the timing belt/valves/piston rings

Re: no start...2001 daewoo lanos
thanks for the replies. timing belt doesn't move when starter is engaging. my dad's got my compression gauge and thats why i haven't already checked that. Running over there today to grab a few things anyways, so i'll test this afternoon when i've got it and when i've got someone else to crank while i check.

Re: no start...2001 daewoo lanos
I have no compression in all cylinders. With two gauges just to be sure. And I checked one of them out on my other car and it worked fine. So it appears the timing belt is the culprit. So is it a sure thing the head has got to be rebuilt? Or is there a slight chance with a new belt and correct timing that everything will be fine?
Re: no start...2001 daewoo lanos
Damn you should have stopped when you saw the belt not moving... The more you crank the engine while not synchronized, the more the pistons continue to crash into open valves, damaging them more, or even damaging some that might have survived. In my experience with Woos, Ive never had an instance where valves survived an impact so your going to most probably have to pull the head.

oh and just replacing the belt is not going to cut it. You need to replace the belt, tensioner, idler, seals, and with 90k miles the water pump too...
