Leaking Trans Hoses Leganza

Post by newTotheWoo »

I have been putting up with a small drip of trans fluid from the two rubber hoses that go from the trans to the cooler. I tried two hose clamps for each end, but that did not work. Today I bought new universal hose. Three connections are fine, one is worse than ever. I will try to add another hose clam, (currently has only one per end). But I am thinking the inside diameter is too big. Does anyone know what the I.D. should be on these hoses? Anyone else having troubles like this?

not calling you stupid,
the 2 best ways to get the right size, is one, try asking the automotive parts store if they have the hose instock for ur car, for the part. if not
two, take off the existing hose, and take it in to get it matched.

the leak.. could be old and fell apart, could be cracked past the clamp. also make sure the clamps+hose can handle the required pressure.
for the clamps im hoping you are using the screw type as the self tension ones arent the best.

if you want the REAL I.D. fine the widest part on the cooler/tranny, and minus about .1-.125 of an inch?

well now for the way that actually makes sence.

you will need to take the hose off and measure how big the nipple is that it has to go on

you cant just measure the OD adn subtract a un known amount, there are different hoses for different aplications, they all have their own unique wall thickness. you will get it close but its not (as wolfy said) the "REAL I.D."

I did take the hose to the parts store. But with many of my cars, I get a glazed look from the counter person, (VW TDI, BMW, Vintage Beetle, and the mother of all "odd" cars, Daewoo.) I live in a small town and drive out of the ordinary cars.
So the guy gave me similar generic hose. I am not sure if the hose I took off the car was stock as I bought it used. I am using "banjo" screw type hose clamps. I will try another one and see if I can find a tighter fitting hose.

Thanks for the input!

lol. i love those people who work at a parts store and give you a blank stare when you ask for something very specific. >.<

anyway, if im looking at the right picture, those clamps are perfect..
and what you did is basically wht i would do, just like i said.. gotta make sure it can handle the tranny oil (wont rot the hose) and handle the pressure, if any..
also, if you would like to try, i use a glue for all hoses and gasket seals. um.. dont remember the name or what not, but basically it makes sure theres no leaks, use it on my coolant hose, thermostat surface to block, head gasket.. etc.. its basically teflon wrap for non -screw things.

also make sure the clamp is behind the nipple edge. lol

Upon closer inspections, it looks like the rubber hoses and clamps are holding. I think the top METAL tube is the one leaking. (Drips down the bottom, inside and ends at the hose clamp.)

I tightened the bolt on and well, I guess we will see. I see there is a washer of some sort on one side of the connection. I wonder if there was another one on the other side...

could also try, if need that teflon wrap on the thread, but idk how well it handles high heat.
