1998 Leganza engine.

Post by kroz123 »

Hey guys it me again,

I have a friend with a leganza and it doesn't drive it, due that the car smokes and the lifters rattle,

He states to me that his mech overhauled the engine cuz the timing belt snapped and he changed quite a few things on the engine,

So I was thinking of buying the engine from him, (Afl.400,--) > $ 230,-- this is the price that he wants for the whole engine with acc.

My plans for this engine are to go turbo with it,

So what do you guys think??

And can the 1.8 ecu work on the 2.2 engine?

Thanx in advance guys.

I'm confused..... your friend said the engine was overhauled.... but why then does it smoke and rattle?

The price is decent.... but it sounds like a pile of work to get it into a state where it could handle a turbocharger.

well I think that his mech doesn't know how to work on a deawoo, when I overhauled my engine it did it too but didn't smoke than my mech saw that the timing was off and now it's fine.

As I said.... the price is right..... I'm sure it would make an interesting project.

The only negative issue is that the parts for the 2.2L are a little harder to find.

In theory you should be able to transfer all your components from the 1.8L over to the 2.2L and then your ECU would work perfectly.

In this case your displacement would be increasing by 22% so you might need to find a way to make some adjustments to the fuel.

This can be done via electronics or by increasing the size of your injectors ( which you need to do if your going to run a turbo anyways )

Normally it's as simple as adding an adjustable fuel pressure regulator.... but your car most likely has a returnless system making it hard to change the fuel pressure.

Ok thanx for the info but is the 1.8 trans a direct bolt on the 2.2 engine?

And must I do anything to the engine supports for it to fit?

So you think that I should go ahead with the sale?

Well for parts my friend who has the leganza got connections there by venezuela dealer for parts, or I can check ebay.

And one last question:

What the engine code/number for the 2.2 engine?

Thanx for the usefull info.

T22SED..... I think your 1.8L is part of the same big block family with the 2.0L so I'm pretty sure every single bolt and bracket from the 1.8L will fit onto the 2.2L

You should look at the 2.2L engine block to see where all the bolt holes are for the brackets and compare it very closely with the 1.8L.

The only thing I can think of that is different between the two motors is the fact that the 2.2L oil dipstick is in a different location.

One thing to consider...... when it comes to a turbo engine displacement isn't as big of a deal so you could also consider the idea of installing the 2.2L engine into your car so that you can drive it around and turn your 1.8L into a turbo engine.

Just something to consider

Ok well I will compare the engine mounts than.

Well yeah that is an idea but my 1.8L motor is no long ago overhauled and I had some problems to get some parts for it.
Dealer only and expensive, So that's why I was thinking of turboing the 2.2L.
