What else do I need to replace timing belt?

Post by DepecheNYC »

My dad's car has a problem so he checked it out from a local shop. They told him that he needs to replace the timing belt.

When the timing belt needs to get replaced, does the tensioner need to be replaced as well? Are there any other things that go with the timing belt that should replaced together at the same time?

Low Control Arm

Post by DepecheNYC »

I went to another shop and they told me that I don't need to replace timing belt but I gotta replace low control arm. There are more than one problem in my car so even though two parts are sort of unrelated, I know I need to get low control arm for sure.

Also, what kind of shocks fits my car? How much do they go for? Where can I get them?

How many miles are on your car?

It is highly recomended to replace the timing belt at or before 50,000 miles so you do not chance destroying your engine.

It is pretty well known that the factory orrigional timing belts that came installed in our cars had a shorter life than they are supposed to.

If you need a control arm, check http://www.gm-car-parts.com for new or http://www.car-parts.com for a used one.

Also, welcome to the forum! :)
If you haven't yet read it, check out the post for new members at the top of the General section. It's got a lot of good information in there, including links and part numbers for parts that are freequently asked about.

i replaced my timing belt at 55k miles only cause it broke...destroyed my engine, had to replace it..when i put the new timing belt on tho i did not replace the tensioner. just make sure when you do change the belt make sure everything is tightened down and in place before starting the car again. after replacing the engine i blew out the third cylinder cause the tensioner wasnt completely tightened....not fun..lol :?

DOOH! I forgot to have the timing belt tensioner replaced when I had belt changed at 46,000 miles on my Leganza.

I replaced the serpentine blet, it's tensioner and the water pump & seal all at that time, too.

Think maybe I should have them go back in and change the timing belt tensioner?

My Lanos has almost 31,000 miles on it (wow ... in only 14 months since buying it new!!) so I think I am going to buy all the parts I need early so I have them when it's time for the change. :)
