Yes that is an intake resonator, my car had similar ones. You can remove them no problem, it will make it much louder tho.

The torque diagram is the important one.... as Horsepower is just a product of torque ( horsepower = torque * RPM / 5252 )

Yah it is a really annoying problem, and my dealer said they know nothing about it too. They told me to bring it in to them when its happening, but thats almost impossible because it is so random. I know I heard something about this problem before and that it was an issue with the ECU, but my dealer...

I have the same problem too, it is very annoying. Seems to be worse when the weather is hot.
