Is this a good deal on a 2000 Lanos

Post by ib2loud »

Someone locally is selling a 3door Lanos, 2000 model 5 speed with 83k miles. He said he just put a new clutch, A/C, and windshield in it and is asking $2k. I was going to offer $1750 just to see what he says. I am a petty avid car enthusiast and I really just need something better on gas because I drive about 80-100 miles a day and my v6 S-10 isn't cutting it lately.

Let me know what you all think and what I should be weary of. I've heard of timing belt problems so I figure I better ask if he's changed that. If he hasn't, how much do the parts normally run? I'm pretty mechanically inclined so I figure I can install it myself.

thanks for any advice! Here is a photo:

if the whole car is clean, inside and out yeah thats a (imo) prety good deal. check on ebay for the timing belt, idler, tensioner and water pump, they should all be changed at the same time. gates brand belts are the best...

i feel your pain on the gas mileage on the s10 i'm having the same issues too. and Skinner (daewoomofo) is right. and if you have cash for the car i'd flash the cash in front of the person. i'm pretty sure they'd take it.

i found that but didn't see a brand name. $100+shipping seems way too cheap so I don't want to get a cheap part that i'll have to replace 10 days down the road...

thanks for the advice so far

Check the car really good...that price could be too good to be true. Does it have a clean title?

That TB kit does seam a bit too cheap. There are other goods one for $180 I beleive

he said it has a clean title. from reading all of the horror stories about timing belts destroying engines, it's kind of scaring me away from this car because I don't want to buy the car twice after paying for parts to keep it running. Are these cars not known for going high mileage?

thanks again

All depends on who maintains them.

Buying a car that's beend riven by a granny it's whole life is seems like a good idea, but, in all likely hood, how well kept would it be? Not very well i'd say.
Dunno about you but i've heard a granny worrying about a service or an oil change lol. ALl they want is their shopping and to go to church.

For this car, being at 83k, first thing i'd do is a timing belt change, and a small service. Oil, plugs, leads, oil filter, aswell as the timing belt kit.

If you change the belt regularly you'll never have a problem. Yes there'll be niggly bits here and there, but as long as you keep it in good running order, it'll return the favour.

It's the same as any car, don't care what anyone says. If it's maintained right it'll do right by you, if it's not, then it'll bite ya in the ass.
Every Nexia i've been around, wether it be mine or a friends have all been around the 50-80k mark, and all had the same problems. SHit maintainance. People dont care with cars like this, well, most dont, it's only a daewoo sure.
But everyone of those engines in the nexias, as said, have had the same problems. Oil gunked up really bad, seals leaking, one even seized due to starvation from oil. My point being, if they had oil changed every now and then, some new oil seals, like most cars need after that amount of mileage, they'd have been fine.

My engine atm is nearly 20 years old, and although has a few snapped bolts in it from working at it, but it runs 100%. Because it's been maintained. The TB and intake is nice and clean, even the oil's still golden. It gets all the small things like the plugs, leads, filters, oil changes, and they really do make a difference. It's sitting up atm, but still gets started once in a while, let warm up, and let the oil get around all the engine.

If you maintain it well, when it needs it, and not when you feel like it, it'll do you no wrong.

I know all about regular maintenance, I had a 94 escort that had 200k miles when we gave it away to the neighbors and he still drives it today, 200k miles later...we took good care of that car and it did the same for us.

The timing belt looks simple enough in writing, but actually how hard is it to do? I've done all of my regular maintenance on my truck and previous vehicles but the most I've done in this aspect is a new distributor in a 350 V8. I can handle it as long as it doesn't require any super difficult things.

Where would you suggest getting the best timing belt kit so that I know I won't have to replace it again in 2 weeks?

will i need any special tools? will a 42mm wrench or crescent work instead of the tool for the water pump? So do you think the kit on eBay is worth it or is there a better place to purchase the timing kit with the water pump and idler pulleys?

I'm pretty excited about getting better than 18mpg again, but having a hard time getting in contact with the seller...
