One of my friends is custom fitting a F40 into his 2004 Grand Prix (will be the first manual grand prix in Canada). He has been using the 4T65E up until now, and has has nothing but problems. Its been built and upgraded with almost every possible part you can put in, but still it cannot hold the power he is making. Last dyno was 581whp on STOCK bottom end..... with the transmission slipping pretty bad. I'll post up some pictures and whatnot when its completed.

difference in engine blocks

Post by Davinci_360 »

So, I have a '90 Turbo Sunbird with the automatic ... sounds like I might want to find out if anyone I know has a grinder. Does anyone have any pics of the two different blocks? It'd be nice to know what I'm up against here ...

Whats the number of spline and diameter of the shaft for F40?
Does that means different flywheel and clutch kit need to be use?

Its a 1" 23 spline for the F40 ..... I will try to double check tomorrow. We're in the middle of swapping a F40 trans into a 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP at the shop I'm working at.

EDIT: corrected spline count.

F40 Destroyed!

Post by exist3nce »

Just as a follow up, the F40 has been in the Grand Prix for about 2 weeks.... but something has gone terribly wrong. The owner says he did a 2nd-3rd-4th pull shifting at redline (about 6200rpm) each gear. When he shifted into 4th, he heard a bang and then crunching. After that, 2nd gear was GONE (as if it was in neutral) and you could not get into 5th and 6th. Since I now work at the performance shop he goes to, I got to take it apart today. Heres the pictures of the destruction!!!

Can anyone figure out how 2nd gear got destroyed while shifting into 4th ? (He didn't mishift so far as we know)

Ouch! I wonder if this could work in a 1.6L Ecotec Aveo? I have an 09'. A six speed would be great.

about the tranny from hell, all i can say is maybe something go into it and just got in between and blew it apart. or it was just weak metal from the start and the heat got to it.

2nd F40 Destroyed

Post by exist3nce »

Its happened again.... my friend's 2nd new F40 gearbox has exploded within a week of coming back on the road. Exact same situation as last time... went to redline in 3rd, then shift to 4th and as soon as the clutch was let go, KABOOM. It was a much more dramatic death this time... it actually ripped through the casing somewhere (we can't see where yet) and pissed out all the fluid within a few minutes on the side of the road. I can only imagine what the inside looks like now :(

He was running 18psi on a T66, headwork, cam, 3" straight exhaust, triple disc clutch...... i guess this combo is just too much for the poor F40.

BTW I can get brand new F40 6 speeds pretty cheap if anyone wants them.

Can it fit an aveo currently with an F16 transmission?

Well.... that is a shitload of power.... must be running quite a bit of torque as well.

It's too bad the F40 wouldn't hold up.... seems hard to find good FWD gearboxes that will take that much power.

I researched quite a number of different gearboxes OEM and Aftermarket.... seems like anything over 350 lb ft gets expensive.

When I was looking for something to handle 600 lbft the cheapest option I found was over $10K.... the most economical was installing a Quaife dog gear set.

Hmmm.... this is a very good article on the Saab gearboxes.... they talk about the rare "euro diesel" F40 I found however many years ago.... cool... I guess I'm not crazy after all

PBoost, did you fit F40 on 2.0 block as you mentioned or didn't? What are you running now?

I have broken 2pcs F28 the same way (one was old, one was almost brand new, both broke the same way)...

Whoa, poor F28 box. How much torque and power are you pushing through it when it broke? I ask this question because I have the same gearbox!
