Dexron power steering fluid

Post by Daniel »

Should I replace my power steering fluid (right syringe, dark but not cloudy, which smells a little burned) or it's good for life?

the manual doesn't specify a replacement interval but i'd recommend a replacement every 60k KMS or so

technically as long as it doesn't have metal in it, it should be fine

if you want to replace it, replace it.

would you just syringe it out (partial change) or would you drain it from the pump (full change)?

Thanks for reply. As I have experienced some strange steering assistance lately at start-up when cold (lack of return, steering wheel "spongy") I'll try a full change. May I use a old new stock bottle of Dexron II to flush the system then fill with Dexron II-D or Dexron III?

Finally it's done with Dexron IID. Did it by emptying 3 times 1/3L from reservoir. So I guess I've now approx 70% of new fluid in circuit.

Improvements:

-On straight roads I had the feeling that I always over-corrected the slightest deviation but not like if it was some play in steering bits but more as something was "sticky". This is fixed now.

-At steering wheel stops the PS pump started to "groan" lightly. Now it's only a weak hissing sound. Yes I know it's not good to go to the steering stops. :smt086

-And I didn't have anymore the symptom as in my previous post.
