I finally have a working clutch. Sorry, no pics, son I'll describe it the best I can. The fork that moves the clutch release bearing is clamped to a round shaft with only a cut-out for the clamp bolt to lock it in place. There is no spline or key. The notch in the shaft had worn, allowing the fork to twist on the shaft and not able to travel far enough to fully disengage the clutch. With the new shaft, the release bearing moved 20mm farther than with the old one. The only other wear on the shaft was where it contacted the upper bushing.
