Re: 1600 16v Turbo Lanos - 1st Dyno run 03-09

Post by wolfhound »

So as most of you have picked up, after i stripped the teeth on the D16 box, i decided i had enough of the turbo motor and sold it on to Nubaroo - and he has a full story on here on that conversion in his Corsa.

So now back to my Woo, empty engine bay, the F20 turned out to be an F18, which according to everyone is a good box, so i had it stipped as its casing was damaged in an accident, so its internals were completely rebuilt into my D16 housing, complete with its longer ratio diff - should be great on the motorway for long trips.

This all meant, now i have a good box but still no motor.

So i eneded up picking up a stripped C18SEL Ecotec motor on the local Opel forum, for R3,500 (about $450).

I bought some 2 litre pistons and am getting it re-bored out.

New cam followers, oil and water pumps, cam belt and all tensioner pullies to be fitted.

New branch will need to be made up and connected up the current exhaust, even though it is a bit large at 63mm.

More info to follow - oh and now i need to figure out a front engine mount and the power steering.

Dam, got a phone call from the engineers, obviously the previous owner of the C18SEL didn;t believe in running antifreeze, so when they gave the block a light skim, the rust on the waterways broke though the gasket line.

So instead of trying to weld up the block and maybe warping it, i have sourced another C18SEL for R3,000 (390usd).

Hopefully picking it up this weekend.

Seeing that i am putting the Lanos back on the road, i decided to finally deglaze the head lights and go the whole KDM look.

So i followed the process on the how 2 section, and they turned out pretty cool.

I then blacked out the grille surround as well.

I really need to do that with my lights... It looks good!

Also, why did you go with the c18sel and not the 2.0l?

The locals vendors want silly money for the 2 liter motors - and seeing that the 1800 can be bored out to 2 litres, it made sense when i could get the first motor so cheap - false economy in the end

Here is the stuffed block after its rebore, then skimmed showing the damage to the water ways.

Luckily the next block is all good, dropped it off with the engineers so hopefully all goes well this time.

Hi all

Been a Looooooonnnnnng time since i posted.

I got the C18SEL all built up, made a plan with an aircon bracket to bolt the Woo power steering pump to, and another bracket to set the Woo alternator up for adjustment on the big block.

I had a Kadett Big Boss (2 litre 16V Astra hatch) F18 rebuilt into my F16 casing along with its final drive.

Put that lot together this weekend and dropped it into the Woo.

My only concern is, the fan belt, which i haven't fitted yet, looks VERY close to chassis leg in the engine bay.

I may need to use some persuasion with a 4 pound ????

Now all i need, is to get the wiring all connected up, fit said fan belt, exhaust manifold, and a bit of exhaust to connect to the rest of the sytem, a piggy back chip and away i go.

Looking Awesome Mr Sean! Glad its coming together! Love the red tappit cover. So now you have a 2 litre again! Why didn't you remove the Egr and Egr ports from the exhaust ports? Other wise looking very very good!

I used a 5 rib belt rather than 6 and it clears the chassis
also, I have a spare power steering bracket made by garrett if you're interested?

Shot for the tip B. 5 rib it is then.

As far as the EGR goes, I didn't want the hassle of removing the bumps in the exhaust ports, as all out power is not the name of the game this time :-).

And the EGR doesn't go through to the inlet manifold ? weird one.

So from what I can see, there is no EGR anyway.

Off to a Jo'burg to visit some of the Wife's family this weekend, so hopefully next weekend I get some more work done on the Lanos, as my 18 year old is driving my classic 1978n Mini at the moment

I'm guessing your engine came out of an auto... they don't have EGR

Got some more bits n bobs connected up this weekend.

Discovered that the Woo starter motor doesn't fit into the big bore block, so managed to get a R100 discount on a good 2nd hand one, thus is cost me R550 instead of R650 (Divide by 10 to get US$)

The front and rear radiator hose, the drive shafts, the alternator and starter wiring is also in.

Now to figure out the wiring - Opel connectors and Woo ones ain't the same.

Oh and the bracket my mate made for the power steering wont work, belt hits the engine mount. Another plan needed.

If I could find a Monza CD 16V its aircon and power steering bracket will work, my brother in law just bought a 1992 Monza CD16v and its parts are EXACTLY what I need
