Astra EHPAS (electro power steering): How I did mine

Post by benzino »

Ok so today finished the mechanical part of the install, so I thought I'd share some pics.

Tomorrow will be wiring and praying the alternator is strong enough.

First, I made sure the thing was even going to fit:

and check clearances between all the hoses:
Image

then I mocked up a bracket to be attached to the modified original bracket:
Image

the bracket wasn't made to my specs and it flexed like a mofo... (and this was after the fabricator stuffed me around for 3 weeks... ) so they took my money but wouldn't help me so i took it somewhere else.

the new bracket added another mounting point to strengthen it up:

some various pics:

and now today a hose was made up using lanos hose parts:

I've probably done this more complex than it should be but it all fits and is in... finally... hahaha

update when it's running

All wired up and driving FINALLY!!!

It's a lot quieter than I expected, it's like a quiet aquarium pump. And it matches the belt driven pump for performance.

it's a bit of a squeeze... lol

that was discussed before and we came to the conclusion that mechanical power steering assistance (belt driven or electrical pump) is not a speed sensitive system

but Mohamed, some do have a computer to sense steering angle and/or speed
so the forenza might...

the MR2 is one model that has computer controlled EHPAS

I bought one two years ago,but haven't had a chance to install it.

What did you end up doing for power?

Seems like a pretty large power wire, I was thinking it might need a 50 amp relay.

I just never got around to looking into the wiring requirements... I don't even have a diagram of which wire connects to which part of the plug ( as mine only has the female connector on the pump, the seller did not include the male portion of the plug )

If you happen to have a picture of the male plug that would certainly help me out so I don't have to go digging.

mine didn't have a plug, it was cut when i bought it...

i wired one of the thick wires to the 80amp main fuse
the other thick wire to ground

one of the thin wires goes to the alt. sensor wire (that goes to the dash light)
and the other goes to ign+ 10amp

one wire is left (the lanos doesn't have the capability for it- diagnostic)

http://www.migweb.co.uk/forums/other-me ... eeded.html

i used 8ga for the thick wire

Thanks, but Dom's post doesn't help as I have no wires at all.

The missing plug is the one that attaches to the actual power steering pump, that is to say I have a pump with two female connectors.

If you could take a picture of where the wires enter the male plug that attaches to the female plug on the actual power steering pump I can then figure out which wire was attached to which terminal based upon the shape of the connector.

I don't feel it will be a problem for me to make a new plug, I can cast it in silicone and make my own plug, but I need to know which wire goes where from a connection point of view.

Perhaps I will be able to find a picture online, I haven't searched yet.

I was on ebay.co.uk and I found one picture showing the female plug.... perhaps now I can go to Migweb if you are not able to help me out ( I don't know which version of electric power steering pump you have )

ah, you have the mk5/H pump...

I have the mk4/G TRW v2.0 so the wires are part of the pump and then a plug is further along
But I'm guessing the wiring would be incredibly similar
i.e. the 2 fat ones would be GND and +12batt
and the 3 small ones would be Alt. sig, +12Ign, and diagnostics

it would just be getting the right ones!
i'm sure mig would be able to help
