dreadded timing belt...

Post by daewoomofo »

well ive done it now...

i tried to save some cash on the timing belt change on my 2001 lanos 1.6 DOHC. i bought one of the budget ebay kits, did the swap, got it all together and it ran great... for about 2 miles. engine stalled, i got it home, cyl 2 has no compression. i can get the head fixed cheaply, but i dont trust any thing from that kit i bought. my question is, can i use an aveo 1.6 timing kit (belt, tentioner, idler, water pump) on my lanos (i know the engines are VERY similar, but i dont know what all is differant) i want to get OEM parts, and daewoo is dead here in the states, so id like to go to a chevy stealership and get aveo parts if i can. thank you in advance!

Why not going for the TCKWP310 Gates kit? IMHO that's the best brand.

i am not 100% sure about the 1.6 engine...

i can only confirm that the 1.5 engines on the lanos and aveo are similar as i have bought a timing belt and timing belt tensioner for a lanos and fitted them on an aveo with no problems whatsoever

maybe you can cross reference part numbers and make sure this is the same case on the 1.6 engine or not... or you can go to Gates as they are the OEM supplier of timing parts for those cars (i found out that the parts are the very same but the "Genuine GM" parts are much more expensive).

The http://www.gates.com site contains so much information that's indeed not easy to find the correct one.
Here is one from "part locator" section: http://www.gates.com/part_locator/index ... on_id=3598

BTW when I got the water pump for my 1.6DOHC Nubira (here in Belgium) I had to cut & remove the protective disc because of different rear timing belt cover. I think the Lanos need this disc.

Daewoomofo,
Try this kit http://www.store.partsdinosaur.com/product1092.html
I just put one on my Lanos, works good so far. I talked to the guy at partsdinosaur and says this belt is made by gates and is the same as the gates marked belts.
