Belt ?

Post by tlcmbc »

2000 Lanos. I have a belt behind the right front wheel that is shredding. Is this what is called the accessoy belt and where can I buy one and how do I change it. Can I find one at Autozone, NAPA etc. Thanks

actually you got two belts in that area but you can clearly see one of them... if this is the case then it is the A/C belt... to be 100% sure... it it will be the shorter and slimmer belt of the two

Thanks. I have it off and it is the ac belt. Was easy to get to. There is what I would call a serpentine belt that looks like it should be replaced, but I think it is beyond my skill to do it. I plan on having the timing belt replaced in the near future so will have that done at same time.

Yes the serpentine is a bit more involved. Requiring the removal of the throttle body, and fuel rail, but it sounds alot more complicated than it is...

Some friendly fyi when u replace the t belt make sure the shop re
laces the tensioner and idler pully as well. If the vehicle is low mileage you can get away with reusing the water pump, but it's seal must be replaced. If you got high mileage retire the pump as well...

the serpentine belt (AKA alternator belt) doesn't need TB removal or fuel rail removal

you only need to loosen the alternator's tension bolt to remove belt tension and then remove the belt... actually the only thing to have to remove is the hose between the air box and the TB

well removal of the tb (two bolts) and the fuel rail (two bolts) makes it alot easier to access the nut on the pass thru bolt of the alternator to tighten and loosen it and it because its pretty difficult to tighten with both components in place.

Actually you guys are right, and I was on some straight bullish. Dunno what I was thinking, but had a 98 Lanos come in today with a bad alternator and swapped it out, and for that you need to remove the TB and optionally the fuel rail: just slide it to the side makes reaching that rear bolt so easy. So Im guessing I had mixed the two repairs.

Anyways this alternator was shot, pumping 16v when engine speed increased, and set a damn SRS code most probably over voltage detetcted, and no damn scanner snap on new or old reads or deletes srs codes on these cars. You would think they do with how much they cost.

Anyways just rambling, and I hyjacked the thread. My bad I shall return it to its rightful owner now...
